Problem addressed
Cartiera addresses different societal problems: the decrease of employment opportunities, the economic integration of asylum seekers and unemployed people, the progressive loss of skilled craft workers, the depopulation of abandoned industrial areas, the consistent production of waste from high quality row materials.

Cartiera wants to offer valuable products within a sustainable value chain, adopting a systemic and community-based approach, which converts fragilities into a resource for development.
Key results and benefits
Since 2017, more than 20 asylum-seekers, refuges or disabled person made a traineeships at Cartiera and 13 are employed in the laboratory. More than 20 tons of leather were recoverd by the laboratory.
Potential for mainstreaming
Through the Cartiera laboratory, coop. Abantu intends to continue with its commitment to providing a systemic response to combat the various forms of poverty present in the area on which the initiative insists by proposing work placement in green jobs as a response to the economic, social and relational poverty of disadvantaged people in order to make the ecological transition just and inclusive. Through this approach, coop. Abantu is working to be recognized as one of the qualified subjects in the broader context of the integrated metropolitan plan of the “City of knowledge and research” financed with funds from the PNRR, part of which will be used in the area of the former Burgo paper mill formerly Rizzoli of Lama di Reno (Marzabotto) where Cartiera operates.
