In Krapina-Zagorje County, Croatia, a project called Lumen is supporting teachers and other educational professionals to learn how to identify gifted children – those pupils with special talents – and to work with them to help develop their potential.

"Giftedness, talent and creativity are the driving forces of every society," explains Jasna Petek, Krapina Zagorje County Prefect Deputy. "Gifted children account for 2-5% of the children's population; they see and understand the world differently, have different and innovative solutions, see further and deeper than the 'average' ones, and therefore deserve our special attention and support."

Over just two years, the Lumen project has trained around 400 teachers, professional associates and representatives of educational institutions. They went on to create innovative workshops around five themes relating to giftedness, and to pilot them in nine schools.
