STEP: a platform to support critical technologies in the EU

Europe is facing major challenges as it strives to stay competitive in a rapidly changing global market. To secure a sustainable and innovative future, the EU has launched the Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform (STEP)

This initiative pools resources from 11 existing EU funding programmes, including the European Social Fund Plus (ESF+), to support investment in critical technologies and strengthen Europe’s industrial base.

Targeting critical sectors

STEP’s funding is directed towards three key areas:

  1. Digital technologies: Projects include advancements in artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, and robotics, as well as solutions to pressing issues such as climate change and connectivity.
  2. Clean and resource-efficient technologies: Investments in areas like carbon capture and renewable energy will help Europe lead the way in clean technology.
  3. Biotechnologies: Initiatives in healthcare, agriculture, and the bioeconomy will ensure that European citizens benefit from cutting-edge solutions.

Making funding accessible

STEP’s approach combines resources from multiple EU funding instruments, making it easier for projects to secure the support they need. For ESF+-funded projects, this means a 100% co-financing rate during the 2021-2027 period, ensuring that no additional financial contributions are required from Member States.

One of the features of STEP is to help individual projects benefit from cumulative funding under several instruments of the EU budget. This will be facilitated by introducing the STEP Seal: a new EU label certifying high-quality projects. This will ensure such projects are showcased on the STEP portal, giving them the visibility they need to secure additional funds.

A pathway to innovation and growth

By leveraging the combined strength of EU funding instruments like the ESF+, STEP is setting a new benchmark for supporting innovation and competitiveness in Europe. Its focus on skills development, industrial capacity, and strategic investments will bolster Europe’s industrial base and lay the groundwork for future funding initiatives under the EU’s long-term budget.
