Problem addressed

Ambasada addresses the lack of accessible spaces and resources for collaboration within the creative and non-profit sectors. In Romania, independent artists, social entrepreneurs, and NGOs often struggle to find affordable venues, professional support, and cross-sector connections needed to develop impactful initiatives. At the same time, there is limited interaction between cultural actors, businesses, and local communities, which weakens social cohesion and innovation potential. Ambasada responds to these gaps by offering a shared, inclusive space that facilitates collaboration, education, and community engagement, turning cultural and social creativity into sustainable impact.

Innovative solution

Ambasada is a social enterprise in Romania developed with the aim of incubating and increasing the impact of the local, national and international doers.

Since 2015, Ambasada has offered a meeting place for non-governmental organisations, freelancers, artists, musicians, social and creative entrepreneurs. It consists of a bistro, co-working space, meeting rooms, performance and rehearsal spaces, and an event hall accommodating between 100 and 300 people. It offers free facilities and services for the creative and non-profit sectors, supported by income from the bistro and related commercial activities. 

In 2020, as part of the Cultural and Creative Spaces and Cities project, AMBASADA launched a community garden in the Azur yard. Responding to feedback from its active community, it later transformed this space into a hybrid work and meeting area.

Key results and benefits

At Ambasada, a free community space was established to bring together creative professionals and encourage dialogue between artists and cultural actors. Among its key results and benefits are the creation of a supportive environment for collaboration, the strengthening of local creative networks, and the promotion of cultural exchange. In addition, Ambasada carries out educational and inclusion activities for disadvantaged youth, providing opportunities for learning, creative expression, and social participation through culture. This holistic approach has positioned Ambasada as both a cultural hub and a catalyst for community development.

Within the European Trans Europe Halles network, AMBASADA has inspired, at the international level, models for supporting non-profit communities built around cultural centres operating in repurposed spaces.

Its hybrid structure, in which commercial activities support free access for the creative and non-profit sectors, offers a replicable approach for other cities seeking to strengthen social and cultural innovation. Ambasada serves as a practical example of community-driven regeneration and sustainable local development.
