Starting a new life in a different country is not always easy. It can take time to fit in, learn a new language, and find opportunities for education and work. That is why, with the help of the Kirjava project, foreign-born people in Finland can find the support they need to thrive in their new community.
Funded by the European Social Fund (ESF), Kirjava aims to provide foreign-born people at risk of exclusion with a pathway to a better life within their new communities. Through activities that include one-to-one training, group activities and workshops, the project provides real opportunities for participants to improve their language, literacy, digital and vocational skills, allowing participants to develop their knowledge and improve their chances of finding employment. To date, more than 50 people benefit from the project, which also seeks to build their social skills and prevent social isolation.
The immense impact of Kirjava on people’s lives cannot be understated. Broman, a 43-year-old man details the support he received:
"The help provided by Kirjava-project was very important when I was applying the vocational studies and Ineeded help when I was preparing for the entrance exams. The support which I got in the beginning of the studies meant a lot."
Nimeri, who enrolled on the vocational studies programme, shares:
"The Kirjava-project has helped me a lot and it has been very important to me. With the help of the project, I was able to complete my vocational studies and get to work."
Nimeri and Broman’s stories show that investing in people and giving them a chance can empower individuals to thrive in education, the workplace and in society.
