Social Innovation Laboratory – LAB.IS

Social Innovation Laboratory
The Social Innovation Laboratory aims to promote collaborative experimentation of new solutions to the social problems of the city of Porto. Starting from a policy of failing fast and well, it proposes to develop a model of structured experimentation - supported by impact processes and methodologies and the enhancement of the spill-overs of the generated knowledge.

This is a participatory, collaborative, integrated, and multisectoral program that establishes a hybrid model of Social Innovation, combining the strengths of civil society, the public sector, the private sector, the knowledge sector, and citizens. Based on an in-depth and participatory analysis of problem situations in the city and communities, new solutions will be experimented with, focusing on addressing the causes of the problems and not just their symptoms. The experimentation model will incorporate rigorous processes for constructing the underlying theory of change for each solution and evaluating them through prototyping and testing processes. The ultimate goal is to continue the implementation of solutions that prove the validity of their theory of change and, therefore, their potential impact, through the support of the Municipality, other public institutions, and/or private funders. In parallel, the program incorporates mechanisms for disseminating the knowledge and learning generated in the laboratory regarding the city's social problems, their causes, existing responses, and their effectiveness and efficiency.

Thus, the aim is to mobilize and involve all sectors of society for a systemic approach to the city's problems that allows generating more efficient, effective, and sustainable responses and creating a virtuous cycle of collective learning
