Young people who want to go into farming sometimes lack opportunities to gain a diploma, or to network and learn with others. On the island of Réunion, they were able to do both – thanks to a project funded by the European Social Fund.
The ‘MFR EST’ (Rural Family House - East) project supported more than 200 students to complete residential activities, together with specialist educators, as they worked towards a professional qualification in agriculture.
As part of the experience, the trainees became accustomed to collaborating with farmers and other sector experts. The experts provided practical experience and advice, while training them in the uses and applications of farm management tools.
Natura is 18 years old and is studying for a baccalaureate. She says, ‘I joined the MFR EST at the age of 15. It taught me to become more autonomous. It's a great school! After my baccalaureate, I want to do a BTS [specialised post-secondary diploma].’
Most diplomas offered by the project are two-year courses, but some are slightly longer. For example, those studying for the diploma ‘Specialisation in the sale of horticultural and gardening products’ also spend a year in the workplace, getting hands-on retail experience.
‘MFR EST’ was set up in response to a constantly-changing sector, where there is a need for agricultural workers who understand new technologies and who can adapt to recent changes. The project allows young people not only to gain up-to-date knowledge and vital qualifications, but to acquire the creativity and initiative needed to succeed in farming today.
