In North Jutland, CO2 is the fuel of the future. Copenhagen is a global health metropolis, while Central Jutland stands as the centre of the world's leading water technology solutions. These are the visions behind some of Denmark's eight business lighthouses.
Denmark’s business lighthouses are long-term partnerships uniting private companies and public actors to foster innovation and advance the green transition. These partnerships focus on using cutting-edge technologies to address major societal challenges, underlining Denmark's commitment to sustainable innovation.
Their aim is to develop future positions of strength, drive regional development, foster economic growth, create jobs, and enhance Denmark's stature on the international stage. They are of strategic importance for the European Social Fund Plus (ESF+) programme ‘Stronger Denmark for Education and Skills.
Created in 2021, with pivotal support from the European Social Fund + and other EU funding sources, these lighthouses act as incubators for businesses, nurturing their skills, innovations, and ideas, emphasising the power of collective efforts over individual capacities.
Harnessing strengths on a global scale
The lighthouses focus on developing new and existing positions of strength through concrete projects in eight different regions of Denmark; each reflecting the unique characteristics of their respective technologies.
For instance, Funen specialises in industrial robots, Central Jutland in water technology, and North Jutland in capturing and storing CO2. Zealand and the islands aspire to global leadership in biotechnology development, while the Fehmarn Belt region focuses on new building technologies.
The South Jutland lighthouse aims to be a source of inspiration for new green energy solutions. Bornholm will be the Baltic Sea's green transport hub, and a centre for offshore wind.
Copenhagen and the capital region hope to emerge as a world-leading health capital bridging growth in life sciences and welfare technology with better equality in health.
A communications campaign to showcase the lighthouses
These eight business lighthouses are emblematic of Denmark's commitment to innovation and collaboration, paving the way for transformative progress in tackling societal challenges and sustaining Denmark's competitive edge in key industries.
A communications campaign has been launched by the Danish Business Promotion Board, showcasing the benefits that the business lighthouses are already bringing to companies all over Denmark.
