- Gijón, a maritime, industrial, tourist, commercial and entrepreneurial city. Located in the north of Spain is the most important coastal enclave of the Asturias region and maritime capital of the Principality, it is also the most populated city of Asturias, with around 270.000 inhabitants.
Our city is distinguished by its social sensitivity, its friendly welcome to those who are different from us and by and a citizen coexistence in solidarity. Our population have also known the hard experience of migration both for political reasons during the dictatorship, as well as for socio-economic reasons during the 20th century. For this reason, human rights is a topic that is in the centre of our political agenda.
Its recent history is the one of a city that has experienced its greatest growth under the impulse of the industrial revolution and an economy marked by coal, iron and steel, but that has managed to reinvent itself as a quality tourist destination, a reference point for cultural activity in the North of Spain and a welcoming place for companies and industries at the forefront of technological innovation.
Gijón also counts with a European Strategy that contributes to develop the international profile of the city. Specifically, our city is active in several networks: EUROCITIES, Atlantic Cities and Council of Europe that shows our international commitment as Gijón has relevant positions in the networks mentioned. The different areas participated in various European projects that help us to learn and exchange experience and know-how with other European Cities. From the institutional point of view, we have 6 twin cities around the world and we have a budget line dedicated to Development Cooperation that financed projects in all continents. Since 2021, Gijón is a Europe Direct Point, so we contribute even more to spread the European spirit among our citizens.
In addition, Gijón has extensive experience in the participation and management of European projects, such as ESF+, INTERREG, CERV, Horizon Europe, EaSI, URBACT, Erasmus+. - Looking for
