Young care leaver follows her dream career – with help from the ESF

For young adults who grew up in care, life can be challenging.

‘It is not so easy for a child who has left a care home to discover themselves,’ says Kristina, now 22, who lives in Karmėlava, Lithuania. Kristina was offered support from an ESF-funded project 'Empowering young people in care to live independently and integrate into the labour market'. Now, she has not only discovered herself, she is pursuing her dream career.

As soon as she finished high school, Kristina decided it would be easier to start an independent life abroad. However, she quickly realised  that it was not right for her.

‘While living in England, I had to work in a warehouse, a candy factory and a botanical garden. I wasn’t afraid of hard work, much more I didn’t like not feeling a full part of that society,’ Kristina explains. […] Sometimes a good salary does not buy the longing and desire to do what you like most.’

So, Kristina moved back to Lithuania. ‘Actio Catholica Patria’ - an organisation that focuses on  helping care leavers to find work - gave her the opportunity to consult a social worker and a psychologist, as well as take part in a series of group activities. Not only did it help Kristina to focus on herself and her own potential, but it also empowered her to pursue her dream job: to be a tattoo artist.

After successfully completing an apprenticeship programme and learning the craft, Kristina is now saving up for the equipment and tools to make a career of it. ‘It costs a lot,’ she admits, ‘so you need to save.’ But she is happier than ever, and confident she is on the right path.

‘I think it doesn't matter how old you are – 20 or 50 – you don't have to be afraid to look your way and do what you like best.’
