INOV Contacto offers young Portuguese people up to the age of 29 the chance to gain valuable international work experience. The project is funded by the Portuguese Trade & Investment Agency (AICEP) and co-financed by the European Social Fund Plus (ESF+) with around €25 million foreseen through the COMPETE 2030 programme. By connecting companies with recent graduates who bring fresh perspectives and new ideas, INOV Contacto plays a key role in strengthening the Portuguese economy.
Through the project, young Portuguese graduates and those not in education, employment or training (NEETs) can take part in internships of up to nine months in diverse cultural and professional environments. For many, it is their first experience in the labour market – an opportunity to apply their knowledge, develop new skills, and improve their career prospects in Europe and beyond.
During their internships, participants receive dedicated support from their host companies, including personalised job assignments, meaningful responsibilities, and a monthly allowance. Co-financed by the ESF since 2015, INOV Contacto is celebrating its 27th edition in 2025. Since its launch in 1997, the programme has facilitated more than 6,000 internships with over 1,385 companies worldwide. The employability rate after completion is around 91%, with many returning to Portugal to apply their skills to the national economy.
Fully aligned with Portugal’s and the EU’s objectives for skills development and youth employment, INOV Contacto contributes to social cohesion by helping young people overcome barriers to entering the labour market. At the same time, it enables employers to access highly qualified talent to support their business growth.
