According to the European Disability Forum, 17% of people with disabilities in Europe are unemployed, compared to 10% of people without disabilities. In response to this issue, Inspiring More Sustainability Luxembourg (IMS) developed the Luxembourg Diversity Charter, supported by the Luxembourgish government and the European Commission, and created the (Handi)Cap Emploi project in 2015. Through a multi-stakeholder approach, the project trained signatory companies to the Luxembourg Diversity Charter in how best to address disabilities in the workplace, in line with the existing diversity policy. Additionally, (Handi)Cap Emploi organised events (job cafes) where people with disabilities could interact with companies looking to hire, and created an intra-company working group - a small group of companies who discuss challenges and potential solutions to including disabled people in the workplace, as well as how best to integrate disability-friendly policies into their existing integration policies. The main beneficiaries of (Handi)Cap Emploi’s first phase were both companies and people with disabilities who were looking for jobs. Three job cafés were organised over the two-year duration of the project with 19 companies, 37 recruiters and 75 job applicants with disabilities participating. 30% of them were hired by companies they met during the event. Companies, in turn, found the job cafés eye-opening and useful in understanding hidden disabilities, such as mental disabilities.
