Problem addressed
Despite the presence of vacancies there is are still a group experiencing unemployment. We have witnessed that there is a group making various attempts to participate or reintegrate into the workforce, yet they consistently encounter barriers preventing them from securing employment in the traditional labour market.
Nevertheless, we also recognize the abundance of tasks and activities available within our neighborhoods and communities. So we created tasks around our participants that match with the skills they do have.
Innovative solution
The matching procedure is very thorough. We meet with the resident several times to really get to know them and to make the best possible match. We create tasks around our participants that match with the skills they do have. The jobs are tailor made.
We provide intensive support to those in basic jobs. We do this by offering guidance on the job, as well as on various topics such as income, well-being, and the changes one faces when starting work. Tasks that genuinely contribute to the livability of the neighborhood are sourced from within our municipality for the basic job holders to perform.
Key results and benefits
The benefits for these participants are multifaceted: Participants have reported higher levels of self-esteem, improved mental well-being, but they also experience a newfound sense of peace and security.
From a broader perspective, the benefits extend beyond the individual level. For the national government, the initiative translates into lower costs for social security as participants transition from welfare to gainful employment. Additionally, increased income from taxes further strengthens government revenues.
Our program is not designed as a temporary fix or a springboard to other opportunities. We’ve learned from the participant that this approach provides them with a sense of stability, it relieves stress. We provide ongoing support and mentorship to help participants succeed in their roles.
Furthermore, we recognize that one size does not fit all when it comes to employment. That's why the jobs offered through the Basisbaan Initiative are tailor-made to fit the skills and interests of each participant. If a job is not suitable for a participant, we work closely with them to identify alternative opportunities or make adjustments to their current role.
This is one of the main reasons why we have not experienced any exits other than reaching retirement age or participant who died.
In summary, the Basisbaan has proven to be a valuable investment in both human capital and social welfare, by providing meaningful employment opportunities. While there are associated costs, the returns in terms of individual well-being, community development, and economic sustainability justify the continued support and expansion of such initiatives.
Potential for mainstreaming
It is a proven approach that aligns well with the needs of residents and neighborhoods. Research shows that the benefits outweigh the costs. It is a method with a vision that can be effectively adopted by other organizations. The basic job program has been running for over four years now, and there has been no dropouts.
