In today's evolving world, understanding robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer a choice but a necessity. As these technologies redefine industries, reshape job roles, and create new opportunities across professions, there is a crucial need to make sure that people have the right skills.
‘Robo CO. - Robotics and AI as future colleagues’ – a collaborative effort among the City of Riihimäki, Häme University of Applied Sciences, and Hyria Education in Finland – was designed to address this need. The project is a standout example of how the European Social Fund Plus can be harnessed to advance expertise in robotics and AI within a changing workforce.
It is increasingly clear that the transformation of work will affect every sector, reducing routine tasks, increasing productivity, and opening new possibilities for creative, AI-supported thinking. A basic understanding of application of robotics and AI will therefore be a fundamental skill in almost every job.
Robo CO.’s main objective is to help students strengthen their understanding of technology, particularly robotics and AI, to cultivate literacy in these fields, and to teach them how to discern facts from misinformation.
Collaborations with industry players provide invaluable hands-on experience, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, and allowing students to connect with the world of work.
Sasu Turunen, a teacher at Riihimäki Upper Secondary School, highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating, 'Students may not have a day's experience of robotics, or they may have had experience since primary school and through leisure activities. Participating in this project is helping me and other colleagues to meet this challenge and get the training needed to stay ahead of the game.'
Moreover, the project isn't limited by geographical boundaries. It explores the potential of a virtual learning environment, fostering international collaborations to amplify the impact of robotics and AI education.
At its essence, the project focuses on empowering people with the skills required for the evolving world of work and preparing them for tomorrow’s workforce, where robotics and AI skills aren't just advantageous but indispensable.
