Young people from vulnerable communities in Fundão, Portugal, are taking part in activities to build their confidence and feel more included, thanks to a project called the Matrix.
By offering alternative activities for families, particularly those from Roma and migrant communities, the Matrix project aims to reduce school absenteeism and antisocial behaviour. But it also encourages an atmosphere of creativity and friendship, helping participants to feel more confident and part of society.
For 15-year-old Patrícia, it has been a life-changing experience.
“I was very shy and I found it very difficult to talk with people because, unfortunately, I was bullied and very depressed, with little hope in humanity and little desire to meet new people,” she explains. “However by attending the Matrix, my life turned right around.”
