Everything but pain: learning in a virtual hospital

At the Medical University of Gdańsk, students can now learn vital clinical skills in a realistic setting, thanks to the installation of a new Centre of Medical Simulation (CMS).

The CMS has emergency and intensive care wards, laboratories and surgical suites, all fully equipped with real equipment and computer systems. Students can practise on lifelike medical mannequins which mimic real symptoms and behaviours – they breathe, cry and even bleed. It's just like a small hospital, with everything except the pain!

The 35 new teaching rooms in the Medical University of Gdańsk have been created thanks to a project from the Polish Ministry of Health, with help from the European Social Fund. Now, the university's training programmes can be supplemented with practical elements which not only give students the opportunity to get hands-on experience, but to record scenarios and watch them back on video, allowing them to further analyse their own work.
