New Time, a project led by the Diaconia University of Applied Sciences, has been changing Finland's perceptions of the country’s Roma minority – and improving people’s wellbeing in the process.
In Finland it is estimated that between 40% and 60% of working-age Roma people are currently unemployed. One of the most significant barriers is discrimination: more than half of the Roma people interviewed for a study by the country's Ombudsman for Minorities said they had experienced discrimination in their working life.
So, with help from ESF funding, the New Time project developed a new educational model and integrated it into secondary education organisations. It also held Roma Culture training days for local authorities and service providers, and coached more than 10,000 participants towards better customer engagement.
