Problem addressed
In priority neighbourhoods and rural areas, young people are particularly affected by a lack of access to musical culture.
In France, around 50 per cent of pupils in state schools take part in musical activities, whether at school or outside school hours. However, this average masks significant inequalities: the figure drops to 30 per cent in the most disadvantaged areas, whilst it reaches 70 per cent in more affluent areas.
Innovative solution
In order to address inequalities in access to musical culture, Topophone offers a range of music learning and introductory activities aimed at young people:
- music workshops and lessons, enabling young people facing social, educational or family difficulties to play a full part in artistic discovery;
- music programmes in schools and medical-social settings, aimed at fostering young people’s creative development.
Topophone also organises outreach initiatives to promote local artists through the organisation of concerts.
Key results and benefits
In 2024, Topophone supported more than 6,000 beneficiaries.
The organisation assesses its impact in qualitative terms across three areas:
- educational and social, with the aim of fostering young people’s personal development and self-confidence;
- artistic, aimed at promoting cultural empowerment through the discovery and practice of music;
- sector-specific, as Topophone wishes to contribute to the development of the music sector aimed at young audiences.
Topophone’s initiatives have, for example, helped to improve musical skills, foster a local musical culture and strengthen young people’s sense of belonging to a group.
Potential for mainstreaming
