Helping people with disabilities become independent

For most people, everyday activities like making a cup of tea or preparing a sandwich do not require much thought. Some people, however, need a bit of extra help to learn these and other basic life skills.

In Grodzisk Mazowiecki, Poland, the Malwa Plus Association for Disabled People supports its members to learn how to live independently. With the new skills they acquire, together with ongoing therapy, they can often start work or job-related training.

And now, a project called "Socio-professional activation of people with disabilities" is enabling Malwa Plus to do even more. Funding from the ESF has not only enabled the organisation to expand its centre, it has also allowed it to buy more equipment and enlarge the day room, making it easier for people to socialise.

Joanna Purtak, project manager, explains: "Before, we had at our disposal six rooms in which we conducted classes as part of the occupational therapy workshops: art, computer, cooking, carpentry, ceramics, floristry, handicraft and sewing. In addition, a rehabilitation room and a psychologist's room.
