Villages Vivants

Villages Vivants is a rural & solidarity cooperative that brings together citizens, institutional investors and local authorities to buy, renovate, and rent premises that host essential services and social economy activities in rural areas.

The project was born in 2018 from several observations: one in two municipalities no longer has a local shop, and the dying out of services has major consequences for employment, local supply chains, local farms, rural heritage and social connections. Business premises in rural areas are being abandoned, while at the same time, citizen-led initiatives are emerging, reinventing local commerce and community services.

Since 2018, Villages Vivants has acquired 30 social business premises across 13 departments and 3 regions in the south east of France. These places come to 190 jobs and €9.6 million in real estate assets. More than 1,000 investors have joined the cooperative, contributing a total of €16 million since 2018.

A few examples of reopened premises include: Chez Cocotte , a café-bakery-grocery in Gibles (580 inhabitants); La Milpa , a grocery store in Luc-en-Diois (550 inhabitants); l’Auberge de Boffres , a multi-activity inn (restaurant, grocery, guesthouse, postal services, etc.) in Boffres (700 inhabitants); La Pompe , a cultural and social hub in Florac-Trois-Rivières (2,000 inhabitants); Le Pétassou , a secondhand recycling shop in Moissac-Vallée-Française (220 inhabitants); and La Folle Aventure , a community bookstore in Trévoux (7,000 inhabitants).

Villages Vivants also offers training and support for local authorities and collective projects.
