Europe's aging population and strained healthcare systems necessitate structural reforms in long-term care (LTC). The Moov&Smile project, led by Siel Bleu, aims to address this by promoting Adapted Physical Activity (APA) across Europe to support people with chronic illnesses, disabilities, and LTC needs. The project focuses on social protection, active aging, and social innovation.
Key Activities and Achievements:
Conducted feasibility studies and APA pilot programs in five countries (Ireland, Spain, Belgium, Germany, Portugal).
Developed partnerships and sustainable models, benefiting over 1,000 participants in LTC.
Published an 84-page White Paper with insights and recommendations for policy planning, supported by European institutions.
Impact:
Established cross-border cooperation, created local jobs, and developed innovative programs tailored to specific health needs.
Enhanced physical and psychological well-being of participants.
Initiated long-term advocacy for preventive health measures across Europe.
EU Support:
The project's success heavily relied on EU funding, enabling costly and risky experiments in new countries.
The initiative sets a foundation for future European projects focused on preventive health.
Future Directions:
Continued advocacy for preventive health programs at the European level.
Lessons learned include the importance of addressing administrative and legal barriers with expert assistance.
The project underscores the importance of APA in LTC and advocates for broader support and funding at the European level.
