Problem addressed
The low-tech approach offers everyone the means to meet their needs whilst respecting both people and the planet. It aims to answer the question: ‘What do we really need to thrive in a world of constraints?’. For over 10 years, numerous initiatives have emerged across the country. To spread the low-tech approach more widely, it is necessary to support and guide the development of these local initiatives.
Innovative solution
Low-tech Lab’s mission is to explore and test low-tech solutions, and then share them with as many people as possible. By acting as a champion for these ideas, it aims to contribute to the emergence of more frugal, more respectful and more resilient ways of living, producing and consuming. It thus seeks to bring about a more sustainable and desirable society.
Low-tech Lab has three main objectives:
- to coordinate all existing low-tech communities across the regions;
- to create and maintain shared collaborative tools to promote the low-tech approach;
- to raise the profile of the low-tech approach by devising simple and appealing narratives.
Key results and benefits
The Low-tech Lab wiki has been viewed more than 2 million times to date. It lists more than 300 low-tech systems and techniques, the result of 10 years’ work. There are also 28 documentaries available. The Low-tech Lab also provides the general public with a directory listing more than 950 low-tech initiatives.
Potential for mainstreaming
Low-tech Lab is a laureate of the 2025–2026 cohort of the P'INS scale-up support programme, jointly run by Fondation Macif and Avise.
