Portugal continues to make progress in reducing early school leaving. With support from the European Social Fund Plus (ESF+), new and interactive teaching methods are helping students stay motivated and engaged, particularly in the municipality of Almeirim.
Building on initiatives started under the Alentejo 2020 programme, the region of Lezíria do Tejo and its ten municipalities have launched an innovative plan to prevent early school leaving and strengthen students’ academic success. The plan, co-financed by the ESF+ with around €2.5 million, includes the Lab Móvel project, a mobile laboratory designed to bring science and technology directly to schools.
Learning through experience
In February, the European Commission visited the Escola Básica Salgueiro Maia in Almeirim to see the Lab Móvel in action. The project transforms how teachers and students work together, creating flexible learning environments where they can experiment with new teaching methods.
The mobile laboratory serves as a hub for innovation and creativity. It allows teachers to develop new approaches to learning and encourages students to explore subjects such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) through hands-on activities. Equipped with modern tools and digital technologies, it reaches schools across the region thanks to its mobile design.
A space for creativity and discovery
Inside the Lab Móvel, students can take part in scientific experiments, use augmented reality to explore the human body, or learn the basics of robotic programming. The space also includes a mini auditorium to help them practise presentation skills, and individual workstations that promote collaboration and project-based learning.
Behind the project is a dedicated team of educators who guide students through each activity and help teachers integrate new methods into their classrooms. Together, they are rethinking how pedagogy, technology and design can support better learning outcomes.
Lasting results for the region
The Lab Móvel approach focuses on three key elements: fostering a culture of innovation in schools, providing the right tools and technologies, and using effective teaching methods to measure progress and results.
Through projects like this, the Alentejo region plans to invest a total of €9.2 million in ESF+ support to promote learning and school success – helping more young people stay in education and build their future with confidence.
