For migrants who do not speak the language, finding a job can seem impossible. Fortunately, migrants to Luxembourg are getting free access to vital French language classes and one-to-one employment coaching through the ‘Coach4Work’ project, funded in part by the European Social Fund (ESF).
When Belihou migrated from Ethiopia to Luxembourg she was unable to speak French. Thankfully, she had the chance to take part in Coach4Work. The project assisted Belihou to beat the language barrier that had prevented her from finding a job: ‘I took French lessons before I started to look for work.’
But Coach4Work didn’t just give Belihou free access to language lessons, it also paired Belihou with a volunteer coach trained to deliver one-to-one job skills workshops and provide personal and professional guidance to assist her in finding employment.
The project’s coaches work one-to-one with the participants and guide them through the administrative procedures and requirements of the Luxembourg job market. They also work with individuals on their workplace confidence, interview technique and employment skills.
Belihou immediately found a job as a cleaner at the end of the project, enabled by the support she received through her participation in Coach4Work. She said, ‘[the project] not only offered us French lessons; they also showed us how to do professional cleaning and how to handle the materials.’
Coach4Work also organises follow-up one-to-one evaluation meetings with coaches, as well as group discussions to enable people like Belihou to learn from each other, guided by their personal coaches.
Coach4Work has so far benefitted 40 participants through its language and professional skill development lessons. Helping to fight against the marginalisation of migrant groups, Coach4Work assists these participants into fulfilling jobs, which made all the difference to Belihou.
She related that the language and professional classes provided by Coach4Work ‘changed my life. They gave me the opportunity to start working.’
